OBSERVATIONS & OPINIONS: WHAT IS WRONG WITH US?
PROFIT AND GREED
The solar eclipse will occur on August 21st and be visible across a great part of the nation.
This is a great opportunity to observe a magnificent spectacle. I am sure many children will take this opportunity to observe the event and maybe choose to study astronomy.
Taking this into consideration, I recently heard a report which sickens me. To observe this fantastic event, you must take caution. One of the devices you can purchase to protect your eyes, special glasses, for if you gaze at the eclipse with your eyes unprotected you stand the possibility of going blind.
I was a scientist and still enjoy reading about the unknown revealed by science. What sickens me is that I just learned that counterfeit glasses are being sold. Glasses which may render the unsuspecting buyer blind.
What is the profit gained by selling a pair of cardboard counterfeit glasses, when the cost to the unsuspected buyer may be blindness.
This is what we have become. A nation of greed, wanting to make money no matter what the cost to the individual.
SCIENCE FICTION BECOMING SCIENCE FACT
Since I write science fiction, I had to give praise to SpaceX landing their 14 story rocket on a barge, not a very large barge, in the ocean.
How many of us, advanced in age and wisdom remember rockets landing in movies or TV in an identical manner. I do not know why but watching the missile land, the fact that the top of the rocket was perfectly flat was something I had never pictured. It’s delivery, gone.
I just had to mention this historic event and contemplate the next science fiction turned science fact. I might share that War of the Worlds is one of my favorite science fiction movies along with The Thing from Another World which scared the shit out of the seven or eight year old Walt. Remember the last line of The Thing after the vegetable James Arness is fried?
“Look to the skies.” I love that line.
THE BIG BANG: THE MEETING OF GOD AND SCIENCE
have spent countless hours pondering the Big Bang.
I write science fiction and have for years been working on a short story, The Event, closely associated with the Big Bang. Someday I hope to get it published.
Now, back to the primary subject.
I am not a Hawking, no one is, but I am still in wonder of what the hell happened at the moment of the birth of the universe. Was this the first time this event happened?
Hawking proposed the Higgs boson as the culprit starting the process of the Big Bang. The existence of this particle has now been confirmed. This discovery is also referred to as the ‘God particle’. There I feel science has found the mingling of science and God.
I have always wondered what existed before the Big Bang. Even time should not have existed. Then the entire birth of everything began. I thought that matter could be neither created nor destroyed, getting that from somewhere.
If the Higgs boson started the Big Bang going, how did it produce matter from nothing?
Who created the Higgs boson?
MARK TWAIN & ME & DEATH & TIME
A daily practice of mine is to look at the weather forecasts. Included in the facts are the temperature highs and lows associated with that date. I sometimes dwell on the years these records were set, years when I did not exist. Could I be considered dead on those dates? Is the definition of death that interval before and after your existence?
What got me thinking of this topic was a quote I read a few days ago. A quote of Mark Twain’s when he was asked if he feared death. The great writer said, “I do not fear death. I have been dead for billions and billions of years before I was born and had not suffered the slightest inconvenience from it.”
This quote sums up exactly what I have been secretly pondering for years. But the part that bothers me is the ‘billions and billions of years’.
I have been both intrigued and mystified by the universe’s creation, the ‘Big Bang’. What follows are questions I have pondered, and the more I learn, the greater my confusion. What came before the ‘Big Bang’? Did time exist before that colossal event? For time is the interval between two events, and if there are no events, can there be time? Time would have to exist while the three other dimensions had not come into existence.
As a side-note, I have been working on a short story, The Event, for some time now and the story is tangled up in the notion of the ‘Big Bang’ and what came before.
As far as I know, the current theory speculates that the Higgs boson created the ‘Big Bang’, a particle which is able to create mass. But what created the Higgs boson, a particle which had to exist before the ‘Big Bang’. Just for a moment, let’s play with science. We all know the existence of the formula E=Mc2 Now, if the Higgs boson created matter, did light exist at that time? For, if light did not exist, E=M0 equals no energy or mass. So how can mass be created if light does not exist? Am I pursuing mind games are these answers known?
I’ve always thought of the ‘Big Bang’ as a combination of God and science, where physics and religion meet in a profound outcome. Was Mark Twain, and us all, dead before life for billions and billions of years, or for infinity?
IDEA FOR A SCIENCE FICTION STORY: BLACK HOLE
I know it’s been done before, but here’s my idea of a story that might be on a slightly grander scale. With this posting on my blog I have proof that the idea is mine. Just thought I’d run it by my science fiction fans and writers.
I just read an article posted on Science Daily, a site I check every day for it provides a wealth of science facts capable of giving science fiction a nudge. The article stated (I’ll provide a link) that scientists have discovered a new black hole. The interesting fact is that it is 30 times bigger than expected, and they don’t know why.
Okay, let’s put on our imagination caps now.
What if the black hole was 100 times as big as predicted, hell, make it 1000 times bigger. The universe is less than predictable. Imagine that this black hole was near enough to our galaxy, or perhaps created within our galaxy, and was able to draw our solar system and a good part of the Milky Way into its region of destruction.
How would that approach effect our planet? Say we had a heads-up of thousands of years. What would mankind do other than form committees which accomplish nothing? What would the hero to this dilemma do to save the world? And if there wasn’t a hero what would happen when our planet was pulled into this massive void? Are we destroyed or do we arrive at another dimension, converted into dark matter?
Think about it.

RANTS & RAVES: SCIENCE FICTION MOVIES WITH NO BELIEVABLE SCIENCE
This may be the rants of an old man, or the product of age and wisdom. Age and wisdom, really.
Anyway, whatever it is, it is not a commercial for Netflix. But if they want to pay me, the income would be welcome. But I doubt they would see my comments worthy of pecuniary rewards. (There goes three years of high school Latin.)
I have been, of late, watching a great deal of horror and science fiction using Netflix’s instant viewing option. Just a side comment. While watching horror, both American and international, I find that Japan, in my opinion, produces the best horror after my limited sampling. The Ring, The Grudge, both remade by U.S. studios, are Japanese movies. I have viewed other Japanese horror offerings that will scare the hell out of you, not through gore and special effects but through story and setting. Some movies had twists I did not see coming, or circumstances that make you think after the movie is over, and experience which stay with you.
Now, back to science fiction.
I’d like to discuss two recent viewings, The Ring of Fire and 500 MPH Storm, both Netflix offerings and both, I’m sure, originally from a cable channel, but I could be wrong. It has happened before.
The first, The Ring of Fire, takes place in Oregon focusing on a corrupt oil company executive and his daughter, an environmentalist, locked in combat over a drilling venture in the state. The premise has the oil company drilling a well far deeper than they were permitted, and instead of tapping a huge dome of oil, headed for magma. Puncturing the magma dome could set off an event, tied to the volcanoes surrounding the Ring of Fire, triggering an event that would destroy all life on the planet. For those who don’t know, the Ring of Fire boarders the Pacific Ocean and is the most geological active area in the world.
I must be open as to why I found this movie lacking. My published novel, New Moon Rising, involves a catastrophic event also involving the Ring of Fire. First, as I point out in my novel, scientists insist that geological events occurring in the Ring of Fire are unconnected. The movie assumes that every volcano is connected to a source which would cause them all to explode because of the drilling in Oregon. Finally, the method the characters in the movie use to solve the end of life on the planet left me chuckling. View it yourself and see if I’m wrong. Just a side note, in my novel, all is not remedied.
The second video, 500 MPH Storm, makes Plan 9 from Outer Space, a classic in its own right, worthy of Oscars, looking like well thought-out science. The science in this film is nonexistent. The scientific logic escapes me. The special effects were poor, at best. The last comment brings me to the inspiration for this article.
In my opinion, some of the science fiction movies produced today have little to do with science. I know it is fiction, but the inclusion of science fact, not just make it up to fit the story, adds enjoyment to the work. Today’s science fiction movies are ruled by special effect and lack any scientific redeeming qualities.
I enjoy including science fact in the science fiction I write. I feel that it allows the educated reader to become more involved with the story.
What do you think?
