ELMO’S SOJOURN, CHAPTER 9

                                                     ELMO’S SOJOURN

                                                              CHAPTER 9

                                                 ELMO RETURNS HOME

Suddenly, Elmo found himself back in his cellar, standing next to Valmid and near his time-space machine.  Valmid made a sound that could only be described as a chuckle as he examined Elmo’s machine.

Upstairs, Elmo could hear Mildred in the kitchen.  Even though it had only been a few days’ journey, with all he had learned and seen, Elmo felt he had been gone for a very long time.  The two travelers slowly made their way up the stairs.

In the kitchen, Mildred was just cleaning up after dinner, washing a cast-iron skillet when she heard someone coming up the cellar stairs.  “Elmo’s back,” she said to herself.  She couldn’t wait to hear about his adventures and what it was like to travel in space and time.  Then she thought, “Wait a minute.  I had to control the machine in order for him to return.”  With that thought, she clutched the handle of the skillet with two hands ready to battle whoever had broken into the cellar.

As she watched, the door leading to the cellar slowly swung open.  Out stepped a young man she did not recognize.  She screamed, “Who are you?  If you don’t leave right now, this skillet will make a lasting impression on you.  Now get!”

The young man just stood there and said, “Mildred, it’s me, Elmo.”

“Who are you trying to kid?” answered Mildred, now studying the stranger more closely.  This young man was younger than Elmo had been when she first met him, yet he was starting to look vaguely familiar.

The stranger then said, “It’s me, Doll.”  Elmo was the only one who ever called her that.  After nearly forty years of marriage, he still called her Doll when they were alone.

After the stranger uttered her nickname, Mildred studied his face more closely as the skillet slipped from her hand and crashed to the floor.  “Elmo, it is you.  What on earth happened to you?”  As she was finishing her question, Valmid appeared, ducking his head through the doorway behind Elmo.  That’s when Mildred crashed to the floor.

                                                         *  *  *

When Mildred came to, she was lying on the couch and the new Elmo was dabbing her face with a wet cloth.  He explained how he arrived on planet Roth and found that the creature he had transported to Earth was a pet of one of the inhabitants of the planet.  He went on to tell her about Valmid and how she would be able to communicate with her new guest.  Next, he explained the complexity of time-space travel and the fact that he survives his trip through the wormhole was just dumb luck.  Finally, Elmo described the increasing invasions the planet Gylex was mounting on Roth and the information Valmid required to repel the invaders.

“Now prepare yourself, Mildred, while I properly introduce you to Valmid,” he told her.  As Elmo said this, Valmid entered the room.  He seemed to be studying Mildred and communicated to Elmo, “Your wife is still very disturbed by my presence.  Perhaps we should do some research on your computer and gain the knowledge of chlorofluorocarbons and give her time to digest your youthful appearance – and my countenance.”

Elmo gave Mildred’s hand a pat and told her that they were going to his study. He then led Valmid up the stairs.  Soon Elmo was punching away at of his keyboard while Valmid shook his head at how such an archaic device held information that might save his planet.

Locating a web site giving the history of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), Elmo began to read.  Discovered in 1928, CFCs, a group of chemicals including Freon, had many uses in both industry and the home.  The gases were considered harmless.  In fact, their inventor, Thomas Midgley, once took in a lungful of one of them to demonstrate its safety and then blew on a candle to show it was nonflammable.  After many years of use, CFCs were linked to the destruction of the ozone layer.  Their manufacture declined and other gases replaced Freon.  Elmo explored further and located the chemical composition of Freon, including the formulation and conditions necessary to produce it.

Valmid was greatly pleased and was sure that the chemists of Roth could manufacture Freon with little trouble, and since he had never had any ill effects before or now from breathing the air, he felt Freon would not harm the inhabitants of Roth.  He had accomplished his mission and was anxious to return to his planet and start planning the deterrence of the demons from Gylex.  He had other plans to consider, but for now, the welfare of his planet was his prime concern.

Valmid turned to Elmo, and Elmo sensed what he was about to ask, “Now Elmo, what are your plans?”  Valmid knew the confusion Elmo was experiencing, torn between his new taste for adventurous space travel and his love for Mildred and the life they had shared for so many years.

Valmid suggested, “Perhaps you and Mildred should spend some time together.  I’ll stay here and amuse myself with your computer.”

Elmo made his way down the stairs and found Mildred sitting at the kitchen table.  He sat opposite her and extended his hands.  They sat there holding hands for a few moments before Mildred spoke.  “So many changes, Elmo.  I’ve learned to expect the unexpected during my life with you, but never anything like this.  You could be my son; you’re so young.  And there’s a gray seven-foot alien upstairs waiting to return to his planet.  It’s too much to comprehend all at once.  Elmo, what are we to do?”

Elmo had given the possibilities a great deal of thought and had formulated a plan.  “Dear,” he told her, “I must return with Valmid to see if my theory for repelling the Gylexians is correct.  If it is not, he will need my help to investigate the history of Earth and what could generate the mysterious substances needed to return Roth to its former tranquility.  The safety of Earth is also at stake.  And there is still so much I want to learn about Roth. I may want to stay there for some time. Mildred, once the planet is safe, I want you to travel to Roth with me.  For wherever you are, that is where my home is.”

Mildred did not know what to say to this proposition.  Elmo seemed so certain, so confident, and her mind was full of so many doubts.  They talked for hours, sitting and holding hands at the kitchen table.  “Mildred, I left here an old, retired scientist, I returned a young adventurer involved with a planet that needs my help.”  Then he told all he knew about Roth.  How, even though it was an alien planet, biology and geology were very similar to that of Earth.   He struggled to voice his emotions.

“The inhabitants of Roth are different on the outside, but inside they share the same hopes and fears as we, the same love and dreams for the future.  Roth is not safe now, but when it is, I’ll be back, and I hope you will return with me to share my adventure.”

“I just don’t know Elmo; I just don’t know.”

Elmo stood, “Think about all I said Mildred.  My future is with you, and we can have a future neither one of us had ever dreamed of.”

They could hear Valmid making his way down the stairs.  Elmo stood, kissed Mildred, and made his way to the cellar door.  Valmid appeared in the kitchen, bowed to Mildred, then made his way down the stairs with Elmo.  A few minutes later a blinding flash emanated from the cellar below.  Mildred knew she was once again alone.

                                THE WAR OF THE WORLDS

COMPARING THE 1953 MOVIE TO THE NOVEL

Of the movies two movies made using
the novel as a guide in 1953 and 2005, my favorite is the movie made in 1953.
Yet that is the movie, of the two, which least resembles the book.

The premise of the movie is an
alien invasion from Mars. This nails down where the invasion originates, of
course, the title serves the same purpose. I say this premise follows the novel
for an alien invasion could come from any planet or any solar system.

One nice touch in the 2005 movie
was to include Gene Barry who plays Dr. Clayton Forrester and Ann Robinson who
plays Sylvia van Buren in the 1953 movie as the grandparents at the end of the
2005 movie.

To begin with, the Martians arrive at
what, at first, appears to be a meteorite. After a short period of time men
guarding the object detect a unscrewing at the top of the object and a device
appearing which destroys the men. What is never explained is how the Martian
machines make their exit with only the small aperture revealed.

In the published description of the
movie, it is said that heat rays are used to cause destruction. But if memory
serves, there were two types of rays. One was a heat ray which caused most of
the destruction and set fires. But initially a ray was used causing men and
vehicles to disappear and is described as a ray which destroys the energy which
joins molecules. Hence, the ray causes whatever it hits to fall apart.

Another difference between the book
to both movies is that the entire planet is under attack. In the novel only
England is involved, the home of H. G. Wells.

In the 1953 movie the machines
arrive already constructed whereas in the novel, upon arrival of the cylinders,
the machines must be firs constructed. Also, the machines in the movie do not
appear as described in the book. The machines in the novel walk on three
extended legs whereas the machines in the movie appear to hover with the theory
that they are manipulating gravity. The machines in the movie are protected by
a force-field. In the novel they can be destroyed.

In both movies and the novel there
is a scene where the characters are hiding in a farmhouse. In the 1953 movie
the characters escape with a rag soaked with Martian blood. In the novel and
the 2005 movie what occurs in the farmhouse is similar with the final result
being the death of a character.

The blood collected and analyzed
reveals that the Martians are anemic and have a poorly developed immune system
which leads to their demise. This failure for the Martians to survive is true
in both movies and the book.

Here is a link to the published version of the 1953 movie.

THE HORROR AT LAKE HARMONY: HORROR SHORT STORY, PART IX

HORROR AT LAKE HARMONY: HORROR SHORT STORY, PART THE IX

This story was published by Necrology Shorts in January 2010.

                      THE HORROR AT LAKE HARMONY

As I sat there waiting, I felt a strange fear creep into my bones as the waves gently caressed the shore.  All was quiet; most of the campers were fast asleep.  Would anything happen?  Of course not, that is the stuff of movies!

The moon illuminated the water’s surface.  I was tired, drowsy and falling asleep when I noticed a peculiar glow in the water.  “The legend is not a legend!”  A glow rose from the murky depths, two red-hot coals just below the water’s surface.  Next, the unimaginable.  The surface of the water parted and what greeted my eyes was unspeakable.  The figure appeared a mockery of the human form.  And the eyes, they appeared as two suns.  I wanted to look away but couldn’t.  Suddenly jets of flame exploded from those orbs of doom and blinded me.  Entered my eyes, my brain.

I felt pain; I felt …

                                                 * * *

A local newspaper published an article telling of campers killed at Lake Harmony.  After four years, the incident was only a vague memory, until …

HAVEN OF HORROR: HORROR SHORT STORY PART III

HAVEN OF HORROR

                                              WARNING

This story contains an ‘F Bomb’ which, in today’s publications, is not a rare occurrence. If you read The New Yorker, among other publications, you are aware of this. Also, sensitive people may find the theme of this story disturbing.

They wondered for an explanation on the source of this ghastly conversion. No one could mine an answer. There were legends of drawings found in the cave, of beings beyond imagination. Monsters with no place in nature. From this knowledge they speculated that beyond this horrible transformation a third journey to, yet another transformation existed. But no one could be certain of the changes awaiting the morphed. Before they managed to isolate those transformed some of the residents journeyed deeper into the cave and thought they heard distant waves crashing on some unknown shore. What did the presence of this unknown ocean mean to those transformed? Could these transformed humans be destined for another phase dependent on the ocean? And what did that turn their friends and relatives into. Were there cities on the ocean floor awaiting new residents? As if all this wasn’t enough to challenge reality, a horrible event took place. The transformed began attacking the still normal residents. Devouring them. The number of mutants was not great and when their threat was realized, it was no problem to repel them to the entrance of the cave. And while a force of guards stood by, a small structure was built above the entrance with no windows and a solitary door. The residents of the town were now aware of the horror that awaited them and did not want to cut off a place where they might survive.

THE GIG OF A LIFETIME, PART III, A SHORT STORY

The four band members began filtering in at eight o’clock, nodded to their boss, and began setting up the stage.

Mac walked up to the stage.

“What’s up, boss?” asked Joe the piano player.

“Might have a sax player for y’all.”

Frank, the drummer, said, “That’s great!  About time somebody saw your damn sign.”  The other band members laughed as they nodded in agreement.

“Don’t get too worked up,” said Mac.  “He’s just a kid.  I’m sure he lied about his age.  But there aren’t many musicians in this part of the city, and those that wouldn’t work in a dive like this.  Hell, by this time of night, there ain’t many sober folks of any sort in this part of the city.  He’ll be here at nine.  We’ll see if he has anything.”

At nine sharp the door to the club opened and Sweats walked in carrying his sax in a beat-up case.

Joe took one look at Sweats and muttered, “Shit.”

Sweats walked to the stage.

“So they call you Sweats,” Joe said.  “Does your mom know you’re here, little boy?”

Sweats’ forehead instantly grew a glistening sheen.

After studying Sweats’ face, Joe said, “I take that to be a no.  Well, boy, I’m sure it’s going to be a waste of our good time, but we’ll give you a try.”

Sweats hurriedly took out his sax and scanned the sheet music handed to him, while Joe introduced the band.  Pointing to each member, he said, “This here is Frank.  He plays drums.  Leroy, over there, plays brass and Fats plays bass.”  The musicians looked Sweats up and down.  He could see the ridicule in their eyes.

The band began to play the first set.  Sweats was nervous at first and made some mistakes, causing Joe to wince.  But halfway through the second piece, Sweats fell into his groove and took off.  The rest of the band had to work to keep up with him.  One by one, the band members stopped playing and listened.  The conversation in the club died down.  Only the sweet sound of Sweats playing his sax filled the club.  Sweats was lost in the music.  He was at a level the band members tried for but never attained.  At that moment, his entire world consisted of his sax and the notes it produced.  When Sweats was done, he was drenched; the club was silent.  Slowly, the audience began to clap.  The enthusiasm of the crowd picked up with shouts for more.

Joe handed Sweats more music and the band played until one.  As they were packing up, Joe said, “See you at eight tomorrow night, kid.  We play Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.  That okay with you?”

“That’s fine sir.”  Sweats was getting ready to leave when Mac called out his name and motioned him to the bar.  “Looks like you got yourself a job, kid.  I got to tell ya’, kid, you fooled me big time.”  He handed Sweats two twenty-dollar bills.

He had totally forgotten that he would be getting paid to play.  However, his euphoria ended when he thought about going home and facing his mother.  He knew she would be home before him, probably waiting for him now.

Sweats made his way home on the darkened streets to the apartment he shared with his mother.  Entering quietly, he locked the door behind him.  He put down his instrument in the hallway and walked into the tiny kitchen.  His mother sat at the beat-up table drinking coffee.

“Where in the hell you been, boy?”

“I got the job, Mom,” Sweats said as he laid his pay on the table and pushed it across to her.

“What kind of job, and where you working?” she said as she looked down at the money.

“Playing my sax, Mom.  I’m getting paid to play.  Shit, I’d play for nothing if I had to, but they’re paying me.”

“Watch your mouth, boy”

“Sorry, Mom.”

“Listen, Jerome, the streets around here aren’t safe during the day, never mind at night.”

“I’ll be careful Mom.  I’m playing with a band, and I love it.”  As he said this, Sweats pushed the money closer to his mom.  She looked at the money.  Sweats knew they were barely making it.

“Oh, Baby,” said his mom.

Sweats knew he had her, again.
