WRITER’S FORUM LITERARY PUBLICATIONS

                        WEBSITES HELPFUL TO WRITERS

This is a series of posts which, I think, will be beneficial to writers.

But first, I would like to include my usual warning about using websites.

Whenever you check a website you are, in my opinion and I talk from experience, being put on a list for sale. So, expect the possibility of being bombarded by ads from companies you, perhaps, have never heard of and have no interest in.

By the same token, I feel that once you call a business for information you are also put on a list, for sale, of similar companies to the one you have called.

That’s just how it is in today’s society.

I hope you find the information offered in these posts helpful.

Anyone familiar with my blog is aware of the area, Writer’s Forum, which already offers a host of websites important for writers.

MY ATTEMPT AT WRITING POETRY

                          MY ATTEPT AT WRITING POETRY

I think, in the remote passages of my brain, I have always wanted to be a writer. There was something about holding a pencil and recording ideas and stories I found appealing.

I eventually chose science as a career. But long before I knew science was the path I would follow, I began writing. My first attempt at writing was poetry and had my first poem published while in high school. I wrote a poem for acceptance in a high school poetry anthology. My friends thought it was a good poem, but my English teacher did not. She changed the end of the poem to something I thought ruined it, but it was published.

While in college and beyond I continued and continue to write poetry. I had quite a few poems published by little-known publishers in even lesser-known publications. One publisher published at least one poem of mine in a yearly anthology for fourteen years. While publishing poetry I adhered to a principle I continue to this day. I will never pay to have something I have written published.

I now write science fiction and horror and have for the last twenty-three years, and still, the occasional poem.

What follows will be a series of published poems.

Hope you find some enjoyment in them.

SNOW, A WINTER POEM

I offer this poem, for obvious reasons, when it snows. In the area of Pennsylvania where I live, we have just had our first measurable snow in almost two years. So, it’s time has once again arrived.

This poem was inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s, The Bells.

           THE SNOW

See the delicate snowflakes fall,

Falling, falling, falling.

Whitening the earth, waiting below,

Falling, falling, falling.

See the mounds of glittering white,

Building, building, building.

As they hide the ground from our sight,

Building, building, building.

See the ceaseless falling snow,

Falling, falling, falling.

Will it stop, no one quite knows,

Falling, falling, falling.

See the drifts accumulate,

Building, building, building.

My longing for spring intensely waits,

Building, building, building.

SEE THE DAMNED WHITE BLANKET GROW,

HIDING, HIDING, HIDING.

MY CAR, MY LAWN, ALL I KNOW,

HIDING, HIDING, HIDING.

SEE MY MADNESS, MY URGE TO KILL,

GROWING, GROWING, GROWING,

CROSS MY PATH, AND I’LL DO YOU ILL,

SMILING, SMILING, SMILING.

DRAGON EGGS, A CHILDRENS’ POEM SERIES

I don’t know how or why this began, but it’s a series of children’s poems with more to follow.

If you know my writing you will know this is most out of character. In fact, in the near future I shall post the first chapter of a novel, fully written and currently being edited, which goes beyond horrific. For now, please enjoy these poems.

DRAGON EGGS

Dragon eggs, though very small

Will yield a beast surprisingly tall.

All it takes is a safe wet abode

To yield a monster oh so bold.

So if you find their eggs, it would set the world a shiver

With the awesome possibility the beast may someday deliver.

But if it’s near the dawn of the day

Take your find, then straight away

Invite your friends, but tell not what you found

And create a huge omelet to go around.

DRAGON EGG OMELET

You’ve made your omelet,

A massive omelet

With good things deep inside,

Your friends all joined

But now they’re gone

Perhaps you better hide.

For left alone

To clean the kitchen

What is that smell of burning?

The ground is shaking, thump, thump, thump,

For company now you’re yearning.

A roar does sound

A mighty roar

And things fall off the wall,

A flame roars past the window,

Should 911 you call?

The house grows hot,

So very hot

A huge eye peers the window,

Seeking the eggs she made with love

The dragon’s come to find you.

DRAGON’S DISCOVERY

She roars a voice

A mighty voice

The tell you of her anger.

You’ve done her harm

A mighty harm

With omelets to your favor.

They were so good

So very good

Good food inside your tummy.

But the dragon roars

A mighty roar,

That isn’t very funny.

She cries, “My kids, my kids are gone,

“Your evil killed my offspring,

“Who will replace me?

“Who will live on?

“What future does your kill bring?”

She weeps a tear,

A mighty tear

That tears your heart asunder,

The thunder roars, a mighty roar

How could you know her sorrow?

She loves her family,

Her now gone family,

Family love she cannot hide,

Her heart is broken, mightily broken,

With sorrow now you cry.

UPDATE CHAPBOOK

My consistent readers,

I have many projects currently in progress. I am writing another novella with Elmo as a reappearing character. The first time I’ve used a character twice, but I really like him. I’m also rewriting some old short stories and see if I can find them a home. Also, there is The Beast Awaits, my second novel which I hope to publish, someday.

But I figured ‘what the hell’ I’ll start something else, something where, for the most part the work is already done. I’m thinking of publishing a chapbook of poetry. A chapbook is more of a pamphlet than a book. The reason I am discussing this with you is that in the past some of the busiest days on my blog was when I was sharing my poetry. So for any that enjoyed these poems, could you please go to both of my poem areas, Published Poems and Unpublished Poems, and select the poems that you enjoyed or said something to you. I know this will take time but I would really appreciate the effort. I’ll get back to you with the poems that made the cut.

Thanks for your time,
Walt
