HAVEN OF HORROR: SHORT HORROR STORY PART II

WARNING

This story contains an ‘F Bomb’ which, in today’s publications, is not a rare occurrence.

If you read The New Yorker, among other publications, you are aware of this.
Also, sensitive people may find the theme of this story disturbing.

HAVEN OF HORROR

Schuylkill Haven, a small town not appearing on any maps, was of little value to visitors who happened upon it. In fact, shunned visitors until they were needed. When this occurred, the residents revealed the heavily rutted road to the town visible and waited for guests. Just as the town was not on maps, so was the road. The entrance to the road was usually heavily concealed for the residents liked, needed their privacy. The road to the town was now uncovered and the people of the haven waited.

The town of Schuylkill Haven came into existence most unnaturally centuries ago. From a small hill far from any inhabitants, late in the 1600’s the town was born.

One day there was movement of the earth on the side of the hill. The bottom of the hill began to push outward forming a cavity which grew into a cave. The first residents of the town began to arrive from within.

Men, women, and children, all naked, streamed out of the newly formed fissure studied the surroundings. At first the light nearly blinded them, but eventually they adjusted to the harsh glow of daylight.

The new arrivals were helpless in this new world. With no food or lodging the were certainly doomed. Coming to their rescue was a wondering tribe of native Americans. With compassion for these new arrivals, they shared food with them, taught them how to plant crops, hunt, construct shelters and make clothing. Eventually explores happened upon the town and were amazed to find white men in such a remote location. With the explorers came more modern methods of agriculture and more substantial lodging. Slowly a town took shape and the residents thrived. But there was a disturbing knowledge revealed to the residents. The elders began to have a greenish tint to their skin and took on strange physical characteristics. Their heads became misshaped and enlarged with mouths wide and menacing. The residents knew they had a secret meant to be kept and concealed these morphed humans.

PLUMBING PROBLEMS: PART VIII

                    PLUMBING PROBLEMS VIII

While Robin was involved with her various activities, I busied myself with some errands.  After a few hours we returned home and as we approached the house, I was surprised to see Dave’s truck still in my driveway.  I got Robin settled with a snack and a video we had rented, then proceeded upstairs to see how things are coming along.  I thought Dave would be long gone by now.  The fact that he was still here was not a good sign; a big bill was heading my way.  Halfway up the stairs, I was greeted by a horrible stench that started me gagging.  I made it up the stairs and opened some of the windows.  The house smelled like Porto-John on a hot summer day.  I was not really prepared for what I found in the master bathroom.  Dave’s tools were scattered over the floor, but Dave wasn’t there.  Yellowish goo, inches deep in some places, covered the bathroom floor.  The smell in the bathroom was horrible, smelling as if the septic system had backed up and that smell was combined with another smell that defied description.  I hurried from the bathroom and started calling for Dave.  I went outside for some fresh air and took a short walk around the property.  Jack was working in his field, so I asked if he had seen anyone walking around my place.  Jack just shook his head and went back to his work.  Finally, I phoned Dave’s office and was greeted by the voice of a young woman who introduced herself as Debbie Watson and asked how she could help me.  I told her who I was and that Dave’s truck was still at my house but I couldn’t find Dave and my plumbing problems were getting worse.  Debbie’s voice changed from that of a professional secretary to a worried wife and then to something else.  She suddenly sounded furious.

PLUMBING PROBLEMS: PART VII

                    PLUMBING PROBLEMS: PART VII

As the weeks went by, my mind was occupied by the problems I was having with the plumbing.  I drove down to the hardware store and bought every drain cleaner known to man, but nothing worked to clear the sinks. But then, they would clear spontaneously.  I talked to Jack and some of the other locals about a recommendation for a plumber, someone reliable and not too expensive.  They told me about a plumber everyone used that had just retired and the business had been taken over by his son, a young newlywed who was eager to build up his clientele and reputation, so I gave him a call.  Two days later he drove up our driveway.  DAVE’S PLUMBING was the sign displayed on the side of the panel truck.  I opened the front door; we shook hands and he introduced himself.

“How’re you doing sir?  I’m Dave Watson Jr. Now what exactly is the problem?”

I described the intermittent clogging of the drains, what I had tried and that nothing seems to work.  Dave was a young man, in his mid-twenties, and eager to tackle the job.  “I’ll check it out.  Could be,” he said, “that you’re cleaning some of the build-up on the walls of the pipes and that’s causing the drain to appear cleared.  But the cleared opening is so small the slightest material going down the drain will just clog it again.  A snake should ream out the pipes and clear up your problem just fine.”

My wife was gone visiting her sister for a couple of days and Robin needed to be run around as usual, so I asked Dave if he would mind being left alone for a while.  If he was done before I returned, he could lock the front door and mail me the bill.

“No problem,” came his reply, “you take care of your girl and I’ll see to the plumbing.”

With the owner and his child gone, Dave went out to his truck to gather what tools he needed.  He first noticed the smell as he approached the master bathroom, a horrible odor that convinced Dave that things were backing up in there.  He opened the door to an unspeakable sight, he turned to run but was grasped by the neck and pulled to the floor.  The stinging pain was followed by paralysis as he helplessly viewed his attacker, then thought ceased.

LOVE MACHINE/STEPPING STONE by WALTER MOSLEY

As usual, I’m way behind the curve in becoming familiar with the important authors of the genres in which I’m most interested and participating in, namely science fiction and horror. The problem is, I’m interested in so many different types of works; mystery, historical fiction, literary works. Also nonfiction; biographies, military history to name a few. My stacks of to-be-read books sometimes gets quite ridiculous, as the list of my interests goes on and on.

Not long ago, I picked up my first work written by Walter Mosley and now I’m hooked on the guys writing having read a few Easy Rawlins and Leonid McGill mysteries, two compelling characters. Once you get into his mysteries it’s hard to stop, but then again, why should you?

Some time ago, while on a bookstore expedition, I notice a book my Mosley, Love Machine/Step Stone. Not even reading the blurb about the short novels, I added it to my stacks. There it sat for quite a few months until a few days ago when I decided to give it a try.

Published in 2013 by Tor, I was amazed to find that they were two short science fiction novels. I know I’m probably the last to discover that Mosley wrote science fiction, but just in case there is one more of you out there lacking in this knowledge, I thought I’d write this article. Both works are complex and well written contributions to the genre.

Love Machine is nothing you would expect from its title. Rather, it centers on a device used to merge individual psyches, and that’s just the start. I finished this book in one night and defy you to put it down once you begin turning pages.

Stepping Stone takes you on a fantastic ride, starting slow with a ‘special needs’ man. The pace quickens as you find both of these observations, ‘special needs’ and man, stand on shaky ground bringing you to a conclusion you never see coming.

If you enjoy reading science fiction with a twist, or are a Walter Mosley fan, definitely give these short works a try.

Here are some links where you may purchase my work.
