THE EFFECT OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON WRITERS

I don’t need to tell writers, or readers for that matter, that for publishing ‘the times they are a changen’’. I’m trying to keep up but not always succeeding, especially in my mindset concerning social media. In this piece I will truly show my age.

In the past, that is my past, writers seemed to be more elusive than they are in today’s world of publishing. They would publish, perhaps appear for a short time in public, and then return to pursuing their craft.

In today’s environment of constant communication and media exposure, if a writer is not constantly tuned into social media and making the public aware of their every thought through tweets, Facebook, blogs (such as the one you are reading now) and websites, they will fall by the wayside. Granted, once you are well established as a writer those avenues to the public are less important. But even those lucky authors who dare to turn their back to social media are at risk of losing their access to the public.

My mind wanders along these avenues of thought. My fellow writers: What do you think?

THE POWER OF THE BLOG

Many of us blog on a regular basis, or in my case, I visit on a rather irregular one. Yet how many of us pause to ponder the power attached to what we are doing? We are displaying, not only to our friends and acquaintances but to the entire world and perhaps beyond (my science fiction side is showing), our thoughts and sometimes emotions. What we consider important.
This realization crept into my brain when I used a relatively new feature provided by WordPress. It allows you to view the hits your blog has produced around the world. Granted, for me, the vast majority of views listed are countries in which only a solitary person read my blog, but that means in that remote corner of the world my voice was heard. Heady stuff. So for me, as my thoughts sail into infinity – and beyond, I will strive to make them clear, concise and worthy of your time.

2012 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

The London Olympic Stadium is 53 meters high. This blog had about 680 visitors in 2012. If every visitor were a meter, this blog would be 13 times taller than the Olympic Stadium – not too shabby.
